100 Years of History

In May 1923 the very first edition of The Mentonian was published by inaugural Headmaster Henry Tonkin, who was instrumental in establishing the quality educational and sporting credentials of Mentone Grammar over the next nine years.
The Mentonian has been published every year since that first edition, excluding a few very lean years between 1937 and 1942 when the Principal of the day, John Jeffrey ‘JJ’ Thorold suspended publication of The Mentonian during a period of strict austerity measures.

But thankfully, he reinstated the publication in 1943 and it has been published every year since. It represents a wonderful record of the prevailing social winds and many School activities of the day, including House events, Student Leaders and so much more.
