Mal Cater

Principal

B Bus (Acc), Dip Ed, MACE, MACEL, MLM Ed, MAICD

Malcolm J Cater attended Mentone Grammar School as a student, graduating from Year 12 in 1981. “I loved coming to school. It was such a happy place for me. The strong academic focus and breadth of opportunities for every student to excel at something resonated with me then, and it still does now.”

Upon graduating, Mal went on to study an Accounting Degree at RMIT before working in the industry for two years. “I wanted something more out of my career than what I was feeling for Accounting. I always had a yearning to teach as my mum ran a kinder, so it really was in my blood.” Mal studied a Diploma of Education to follow his passion for teaching.

“I wanted to be back at the school that held such fond memories for me and applied to teach at Mentone Grammar in 1987. For 11 years, I was a Teacher and House Coordinator and felt so fortunate to be working with these incredible young people who I felt taught me as much as I taught them.”

Looking for the new challenge of an Educational Leadership role, Mal successfully applied to be the Senior Master at Girton Grammar School in Bendigo. After two years, he was approached to return to Mentone Grammar as the Deputy Headmaster. He could not say no to his heart and served in the position for six years.

Mal Cater is now serving his 11th year as the dedicated and passionate Principal of Mentone Grammar. Mal has completed a Masters of Educational Leadership and Management and is a Member of the Australian College for Educators, Australian College for Educational Leaders and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
