It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Colin McGill, former teacher and beloved member of the Mentone Grammar community. Colin dedicated 29 years of his life to serving as a teacher, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless students.
Colin’s commitment to education and his passion for teaching made him an exceptional teacher, particularly in the learning areas of science and mathematics. He was a skilled professional who made the subjects interesting for his students and accordingly helped them to achieve excellent results.
Before his initial illness, he was also renowned for his football coaching and umpiring, leadership as an Officer of Cadets, and his conscientious pastoral supervision both in and outside the classroom. Upon his retirement in 2016, he was awarded Master Emeritus honouring his long teaching service, dedication and commitment to the School.
Colin was an inspiration who despite becoming permanently disabled as a result of two medical disasters, recovered to the extent that he was able to return to teaching against the odds. You can read more about his courageous story in his published book, ‘The Phoenix Rises: A Story of Survival’.
Colin’s passing is a great loss to our School community. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this challenging time. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
