Vale – Garry Whitton (Class of 1971)
5 MARCH 1953 – 30 JANUARY 2026
The Mentonians community was saddened to learn of the passing of Garry Whitton, who passed away on 30 January 2026, aged 72.
Garry was born on 5 March 1953 and attended Mentone Grammar School from 1965 to 1971, completing Sixth Form in 1971.
He enjoyed the more artistic side of his education and also liked to play hockey. Like the rest of the family, he was a lifelong supporter of Essendon in the VFL/AFL.
Some of his contemporaries at Mentone Grammar included Ken Peel, Gary Norton, Manfred Totouwa and Michael Usher, among many others.
After leaving school, Garry commenced a cadetship at Myer Melbourne in the city store’s fashion department. Over the course of his career, he progressed to become General Manager of a company specialising in theatre, opera and sporting event bookings, with celebrities among its main clientele.
In later life, Garry qualified to work in aged care and dedicated himself to supporting elderly people who preferred to remain in their own homes rather than move into residential care.
Garry passed away on 30 January 2026, ironically at an aged care facility, Mercy Place Werribee.
He will be remembered by family, friends and fellow Mentonians for his kindness, dedication to others, appreciation of the arts, and the friendships he formed throughout his life.
