Vale – Ian ‘Hilly’ Hill (Class of 1966)

Ian ‘Hilly’ Hill was a much-loved member of the Mentone Grammar community whose achievements in sport, leadership and school life left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Joining Mentone Grammar in 1960, Ian quickly established himself as an outstanding all-round athlete. He was appointed a Prefect in 1966 and served as Captain of Athletics in both 1965 and 1966, a reflection of the respect in which he was held by staff and fellow students alike.

Ian’s sporting achievements were exceptional. He was a member of the 1st XVIII Football Team in 1965 and 1966, earning Half Colours for Football in his final year. On the athletics track, he was a dominant competitor, winning the Senior Cross Country championship for three consecutive years from 1964 to 1966 and receiving Half Colours for Athletics in each of those years.

The pages of The Mentonian from 1966 reveal a student remembered not only for his accomplishments, but also for his character and sense of fun. Known affectionately as ‘Hilly’, Ian was praised for his football prowess, with one report noting that his “soaring fingertip marks and uncanny ball handling delighted his huge cavalcade of supporters”. The 1966 edition also recorded his success at the House Athletics Sports, where he won “the open mile, 880 yards and 440 yards in fine style”.

Beyond his sporting achievements, Ian was known for his wit and lively personality. One memorable account observed that he often demonstrated “the effects of hydrogen sulphide on the human body” in the science laboratories, leading his fellow Prefects to bestow upon him the title of “most volatile Prefect”. It is a story that speaks to the good humour, warmth and camaraderie that surrounded him during his years at School.

Ian’s legacy is one of leadership, sporting excellence and kindness. We remember with gratitude the contribution he made to the life of Mentone Grammar and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him.
