Vale – John Upham

Mentone Grammar and The Mentonians Association are deeply saddened to announce the passing of John William Upham (Class of 1968), a proud alumnus and cherished member of our community.

Born on 9 August 1950, John lived a life full of dedication and achievement before passing away on 25 November 2025.

John joined Mentone Grammar in 1967 in Form V and completed his schooling in 1968 after finishing Form VI (Year 12). During his time at the School, John made an indelible mark through his sporting achievements and leadership. In 1967, he was a member of the First XVIII Football Team and received Half Colours for football
and Full Colours for athletics.

The following year, John captained the First XVIII Football Team, represented the School in the Tennis First IV Team, and was awarded Full Colours for football and athletics and Half Colours for tennis. His commitment and talent exemplified the values of Mentone Grammar and continued to inspire generations of students.

A memorial service to honour and celebrate the life of John was held on Friday 5 December 2025 at Beaconhills Golf Club, Beaconsfield Upper. In lieu of flowers, John’s family kindly invited donations to the Kiwanis Club of Waverley, supporting their valuable community work.

John will be remembered with great affection and respect by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
