Vale – ROBERT WISEMAN

Mentone Grammar and The Mentonians Association are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robert Wiseman, a former staff member and valued member of our School community.

Robert passed away on 26 June at Monash Medical Centre, following a long and brave battle with cancer.

A message from Former Headmaster, Neville Clark OAM inspired the following tribute.

Robert taught Drama and English at Mentone Grammar during the 1990s and is remembered fondly for his thoughtful approach to teaching and his dedication to the performing arts. Among his most notable productions were Michael Gow’s Away, during which he made imaginative use of the Headmaster’s slides from the Vietnam War, and Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot, produced with Lewis Plumridge as Musical Director. In his characteristic self-effacing manner, Robert encouraged his young actors to think deeply about their roles, guiding them to develop their characters through personal initiative and reflection. His gentle encouragement and quiet dedication left a lasting impression on many students and colleagues.

Robert later resigned from the staff to care for his widowed mother in his own home and, following her passing, continued to care for his unmarried sister until she moved into care. His life was one marked by humility, service, and devotion to others.

Born in Germany, where his father served in the British Army of the Rhine, Robert carried with him a strong sense of faith and service throughout his life. A man of deep Christian faith, his favourite Anglican prayer was, ‘Lighten our darkness’.

Robert never married, but he leaves a lasting legacy among former colleagues and students as an inspiring example of humble service, quiet strength, and genuine care.

We extend our sincere condolences to all who knew, worked with, and were taught by Robert.
