FROM MENTONE GRAMMAR TO GLOBAL MINISTRY: JOHN SHEPHERD’S JOURNEY AND HIS LATEST BOOK

Mentone Grammar proudly celebrates the achievements of the Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd AM (Class of 1959), recipient of the Tony Drinan Medal in 2003 and author of the newly published Worship and the Mystery of God.

This book offers a profound study of Anglican worship, its theology, history and liturgical development and draws on John’s decades of experience, including his tenure as Dean of Perth Cathedral (1990 – 2014).

Reflecting on his journey, John credits Mentone Grammar for igniting his passion:

“At the end of Year 10, Headmaster Lionel Large told me, ‘Your areas are music, history and theology. Immerse yourself in them.’ That advice changed my life.”

Supported by inspiring teachers and mentors, John pursued studies at Cambridge and served in prestigious roles at Christ Church Oxford and St George’s Cathedral Perth.

“For all this I remain extremely grateful, and this book, ‘Worship and the Mystery’ of God is a direct result of the School’s encouragement and support.”

Our Chaplain, Rev Andrew Stewart, shares this with our alumni community:

“John has such a rich and deep insight into the Anglican tradition. His book will offer valuable perspectives for our students as they gather in worship.”

School Chaplain Rev Andrew Stewart gives the book his tick of approval!
